Committed to Enhancing Support for IDP Students at ACOHOF Complex in Bankim
The Afoni Children of Hope Foundation (ACOHOF) has its origins in Tatum, located in the Bui Division of the North-West Region. For almost ten years, Tatum was at the core of our work. It is where we established our first Family Farm School, hosted our primary headquarters, and shared important educational content, farming tips, and hope with the community through ACOHOF Community Radio (FM 98.5).
However, the intensification of the armed conflict in the North-West and South-West regions radically changed life as we knew it.
To safeguard our staff and students, we had to make the difficult decision to suspend activities in Tatum. This meant our main office closed, operations at the Tatum Family Farm School ceased, and our community radio station went quiet.
Although the conflict compelled us to relocate, it did not diminish our determination. Instead, it broadened our mission.
The New Frontline: Rebuilding in Bankim
To escape the violence, we moved all our main activities to Bankim, a peaceful town in the Adamaoua Region. When we arrived, we discovered we were not alone—hundreds of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from our communities had also sought safety here, living under extremely fragile conditions.
Today, Bankim leads our response efforts. We have unified our initiatives into a strong, dual-institution educational system to provide displaced and underprivileged children with a pathway to lasting self-reliance.
Due to circumstances beyond their control, numerous internally displaced children have assumed the role of primary breadwinners within their families. They have experienced significant interruptions in their education. At our Bankim campus, we provide a secure environment, trauma-informed support, and prospects for a better future.
Two Crucial Initiatives Driving Success in Bankim
To ensure that our students not only survive but genuinely thrive and compete effectively in a contemporary economy, we have committed ourselves to two fundamental pillars on campus.
1. Nourishing Minds: The School Feeding Program:
Many of our IDP students arrive malnourished, having fled conflict with nothing. You cannot teach a starving child. Our campus feeding program ensures that every student receives nutritious, hot daily meals. This helps stabilize their health, keeps them focused in the classroom, and relieves them of the worry about finding food after school.
The computer lab at ACOHOF Schools in Bankim is essential for strengthening ICT education, particularly by helping students gain practical digital skills that are important in today’s world. With regular opportunities to use computers, learners build skills in typing, conducting research, managing data, and using educational software, which makes learning more engaging and productive. For many students, this lab is their first real introduction to modern technology, helping them feel more confident, improve their academic results, and prepare for further studies and future careers in a world shaped by technology.
For internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the crisis-affected Northwest region, the computer lab matters even more. Many of these students have had their schooling interrupted and have limited access to resources, but the lab offers a steady and encouraging space where they can continue learning using digital tools. It enables them to get back on track academically, access online learning materials, and begin to restore a sense of normal life and hope. By providing these vulnerable learners with ICT skills, the school addresses their immediate educational needs while also giving them a chance to integrate, become more self-reliant, and work toward a brighter future
How You Can Make a Difference Today
While ACOHOF does all it can to develop infrastructure and clear farmland, our students most often arrive at our gates with nothing. We urgently need material and financial support to provide the basic tools for survival, dignity, and learning:
Category | Immediate, Essential Needs |
| School Feeding Support | Funding for bulk food supplies (rice, beans, oil) to secure daily hot meals |
| Computer Lab Equipment | Laptops, desktop computers, power surge protectors, and internet setups |
| Dormitory Kits | Bed sheets, warm blankets, and pillows for the school dorms |
| learning Materials | Textbooks, school bags, notebooks, writing instruments, and school uniforms |
| Agricultural Tools | Farming hand tools and entrepreneurship training kits |
