ACOHOF PROGRAM AREAS
At ACOHOF, we hold a steadfast belief that uplifting the vulnerable is the cornerstone of forging strong, enduring communities. Amidst the waves of regional challenges, we have broadened our reach to extend vital aid to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), all the while steadfastly championing the cause of orphans, disadvantaged children, and those battling rare diseases. Our mission is woven with compassion and purpose, offering support that not only meets urgent needs but also nurtures lasting wellness—empowering individuals and communities alike to rise, rebuild, and reclaim their futures with dignity and hope.
PROGRAM 1: Quality Education & Inclusive Vocational Training:
At the heart of our mission lies a steadfast belief: education is the key that unlocks the door out of poverty. From nurturing young minds in primary school to honing advanced technical skills, our programs ensure every child and displaced youth has a chance to thrive.
Introducing the "Back to School with ACOHOF" initiative—an annual tradition where we equip orphans, underprivileged children, and internally displaced persons with everything they need to succeed: school fees, uniforms, and essential supplies tailored to their grade level.
Our signature approach, the Pedagogy of Alternation, blends classroom lessons with hands-on, on-farm experience, cultivating not just knowledge but true professional independence.
Our Educational Institutions include:
- ACOHOF Family Farm School in Tatum (suspended operations due to armed conflict),
- ACOHOF Family Farm School in Bankim, a sanctuary for displaced youth seeking skills in agriculture and vocational training,
- ACOHOF Bilingual Technical Vocational College of Agriculture and Entrepreneurship (ATVOCAE), the objective is to educate and develop job creators, skilled professionals, and conscientious citizens who are prepared to address current global demands and future challenges in innovation, including Artificial Intelligence, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and entrepreneurship.
Through these efforts, we empower marginalized youth and IDPs with the tools of sustainable rural entrepreneurship and cutting-edge agricultural and livestock practices—planting seeds today for a flourishing tomorrow.
PROGRAM 2: COMMUNITY HEALTH OUTREACH (MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY & RARE DISEASES INCLUDING DISABILITIES)
We bring critical health interventions, resources, and institutional support directly to rural and slum communities that lack basic access to healthcare.
Muscular Dystrophy & Rare Diseases:
ACOHOF’s identity and mission are centered around our deep commitment to supporting children and families affected by muscular dystrophy and other rare genetic conditions. We take a holistic and compassionate approach in our work, which includes providing essential support resources, counseling families, educating them on how to support their children, and guiding them to professional hospitals and clinics for diagnosis, treatment advice, and ongoing management.
We also prioritize awareness and advocacy to reduce stigma, promote early detection, and amplify the voices of those living with rare conditions. Through caregiver support initiatives, counseling, and community engagement, we help families navigate the physical, emotional, and financial challenges associated with these conditions.
By combining care, education, and advocacy, ACOHOF strives to improve the quality of life for every child and family affected by muscular dystrophy and rare diseases, ensuring they can live with dignity, inclusion, and hope.
Preventive Health Education:
Conducting public health campaigns regarding HIV/AIDS, substance abuse prevention, and the mitigation of early teenage pregnancies.
Inclusive Communities & Disability Justice
At ACOHOF, we are committed to promoting the dignity, inclusion, and well-being of persons with disabilities through practical, community-based support. We facilitate access to inclusive education by providing school materials and tailored learning support for children with disabilities, and we support livelihoods through vocational training programs such as tailoring, crafts, and small business development.
We also organize medical outreach initiatives, including the distribution of assistive devices such as wheelchairs and mobility aids. Through community sensitization campaigns, we work to reduce stigma and promote acceptance, while empowering persons with disabilities to actively participate in community life. Our approach ensures that individuals with disabilities are not only supported but also equipped with the tools and opportunities needed to live independent, confident, and fulfilling lives.
PROGRAM 3: Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)
Clean water is a fundamental human right and essential for health, education, and community development. At ACOHOF, we collaborate through strategic partnerships to provide sustainable clean-water solutions to rural communities, ensuring safe, reliable access for households and schools.
Our Water Disinfection Systems (WADIS) projects, carried out in partnership with organizations such as Engineers Without Borders (EWB) Sweden, involve installing advanced WADIS 2 and 3 systems. These systems ensure that communities have consistent access to safe, treated drinking water. Additionally, we promote environmentally friendly solutions by integrating Solar Water Disinfection (SODIS) methods and renewable energy technologies, such as solar-powered systems, to enhance sustainability and reduce long-term costs.
By combining innovation, partnership, and community engagement, ACOHOF ensures that rural populations have access to clean water in effective and environmentally responsible ways, ultimately improving overall well-being and supporting long-term development.
How SODIS (Solar Water Disinfection) Works
Solar Water Disinfection (SODIS) is a simple and low-cost method for purifying drinking water using sunlight. It is particularly effective in rural communities where access to treated water is limited.
The process involves filling transparent plastic bottles (usually made of PET) with clear water and placing them in direct sunlight for several hours. On a sunny day, this typically takes around 6 hours, while under cloudy conditions, it may take up to 2 days. As the bottles are exposed to sunlight, two key processes occur:
UV Radiation:
Ultraviolet (UV-A) rays from the sun penetrate the water, effectively destroying harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
Heat:
The temperature inside the bottles rises, enhancing the disinfection process by weakening and killing pathogens.
Together, these effects of sunlight and heat make the water safe to drink without the need for chemicals or complex equipment.
For optimal results, the water should be relatively clear (low turbidity), as highly turbid water can block sunlight. After exposure, the water can be consumed directly from the bottles, minimizing the risk of recontamination.
SODIS is a sustainable, environmentally friendly solution that uses readily available resources—sunlight and plastic bottles—to improve access to safe drinking water and protect community health.
PROGRAM 4: Emergency, Humanitarian Relief & Economic Empowerment
When crises compel families to leave their homes, it is imperative that immediate humanitarian assistance is accompanied by pathways to economic recovery. At ACOHOF, we adopt a dual approach that not only addresses urgent survival needs but also empowers displaced individuals to reconstruct their livelihoods with dignity and independence.
Through our Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Crisis Support program, we provide timely emergency assistance to families affected by armed conflicts. This support includes food aid, essential supplies, healthcare services, and temporary shelter. Our interventions are designed to restore safety, stability, and hope during the most vulnerable periods of displacement.
In addition to immediate relief, we prioritize long-term resilience through the ACOHOF Rural Investment Fund (ARIF). This initiative offers microloans and low-interest financing specifically targeted at women and youth, equipping them with the necessary resources to establish or rebuild small-scale businesses. By fostering entrepreneurship and promoting financial inclusion, ARIF assists displaced families in transitioning from dependency to self-sufficiency, thereby enhancing household incomes and facilitating community recovery.
Through this integrated approach, ACOHOF ensures that affected families not only receive critical support during crises but are also empowered to create sustainable futures.
PROGRAM 5: Media, Community Voice & Human Rights Action
Sustainable development depends on access to information and opportunities for communities to actively participate in shaping their future. At ACOHOF, we are committed to strengthening these foundations by expanding communication channels and fostering inclusive dialogue.
Through our Community Radio Initiatives, we improve access to timely, reliable, and locally relevant information, particularly for underserved and crisis-affected populations. Building on the success of ACOHOF Community Radio (FM 98.5) in Tatum, we are actively working to establish a new station in Bankim to serve Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and host communities.
Radio is especially effective in reaching IDPs because it remains accessible even in fragile environments where internet access, electricity, and digital devices are limited.
With simple battery-powered or solar-powered radios, displaced families can receive life-saving information, including humanitarian aid updates, health guidance, and security alerts, and access essential services. In addition, radio supports children's continued learning and offers a trusted platform for sharing community messages.
Beyond information delivery, community radio fosters connection and inclusion. Broadcasting in local languages such as Tikar, Yamba, Fulfulde, Lamnso, and Limbum, and reflecting the realities of displaced populations, helps restore a sense of belonging, encourages dialogue, and strengthens social cohesion among affected communities.
Through these efforts, ACOHOF ensures that even in times of crisis, communities remain informed, connected, and empowered
